CuTips
Hello fellow Cubase Music Makers!
UBIK MUSIC presents
Useful Cubase Tips to enhance your MIDI and Audio Music making experience!

THE CURRENT TIP is:

REALTIME AUDIO COMPING in Cubase VST or
"Why can't I just keeping vamping over the chorus, while it loops?"
____  Recording a live performace, especially vocals or guitar often needs multiple takes before that "keeper" take is achieved. Rather than stop Cubase after each pass it’s much more convenient to just keep recording in cycle mode. In cycle mode the audio is recorded into one long audio file but when you open the Audio editor this will have been conveniently divided into segments and stacked onto separate lanes. Each segment matches the length and represents a different lap of the cycle. A perfect take can then be assembled by trimming and masking the material.
____   For example, if the vocalist is having trouble with the chorus, simply set up a cycle to repeat over that section and record a numberof takes in one go. Note that, although this can be a convenient and time saving way of capturing that elusive magical performance. audio recording in cycle mode can also produce lengthy audio files on the hard disk.
Recording And Editing Audio In Cycle Mode
  • In the Arrange window, set the left and right locators at the start and end points of the relevant section of music. Activate the cycle button. Make sure you are in Overdub mode (selected on the top left of the transport bar) .
  • Start recording before (to the left of) your left locator. Don't drop into record between your song locators
  • Keep recording for asmany "laps" as you need to get the desired result.
  • Stop recording. A single "Part" will appear between the left and right locators on the record track

  • Double click on the Part to open it in the Audio editor. Each lap of the cycle is represented in a different segment, stacked as "lanes" of the editor (as described above). When playing back the audio, only one of the segments can be heard (usually the one in the top lane), since all these events are on the same Audio channel

TIP- If you don't see the audio represented on seperate lanes, make sure that "By Output" in the View menu is NOT enabled. If it isn't then you may not have recorded long enough or you weren't in cycle (loop) mode or you were set to "replace" mode, instead of "overdub" (this setting found on the left edge of the transport bar).
  • By using the mute tool (looks like a big 'X' in the toolbox) you can audition the differnt takes. If you find an acceptable one just click on the othertakes, and either mute or delete them. However, what most people do is to construct a composite take using the best elements of all the takes. This is done by trimming, slicing, masking or muting the segments as requiredin order to assemble the best composite take for the section. Remember that the last take recorded is the one in the top lane and the take that initially will be heard.
TIP- Enabling "Snap to zero" in the Audio menu will help cut down the audio clicks which can occur during the editing process.

  • To see the composite take on one contiguous lane, enable By Output in the View
menu. Try also disabling Handles in the View menu to clarify thedisplay.
